FCC SETS TRANSLATOR FILING WINDOW

From "Tom Taylor Now" on June 2, 2017:

Save The DateFCC sets the date for the first new-translator filing window of 2017.

The opening date for the auction is Wednesday, July 26, and it’s reserved for Class C and D AM stations. Those are the ones “having the least power and/or the most limited or nonexistent nighttime service.” The other requirement is that they didn’t participate in either of last year’s filing windows. Last year was the time for AM operators to buy and/or move existing translators up to 250 miles. This year is all about locating the spectrum for brand-new translators. There will be this window, opening July 26, then a second window (date TBA), for Class A and B AM stations. And then that’s it. Veteran consultant Steve Moravec of Minnesota-based Phoenix Media Group tells this NOW Newsletter “we don’t really know what will happen after these two windows, and there is no guarantee there will be anything else.” He’s calling this “the last translator land rush.” His advice in the AM Revitalization derby is “better do it now, because there may not be a tomorrow.” AM licensees could still buy licensed translators, but who knows if they’d be allowed to move them 250 miles, as with last year’s windows? Besides, spectrum is getting scarce.
